In short: In 1991, WrestleMania VII traded a massive coliseum for a smaller arena. While the WWF cited security concerns due to a controversial Iraqi sympathizer storyline, others pointed to underwhelming ticket sales. This shift set the stage for a highly patriotic event amidst the tensions of the Gulf War.

On March 24, 1991, the World Wrestling Federation reached a turning point during WrestleMania VII at the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena. Originally planned for the much larger Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, the event was moved to the adjacent Sports Arena. The company officially cited security concerns because the main event featured Sgt. Slaughter, who was portraying an Iraqi sympathizer during the Gulf War. However, some observers, such as SLAM! Sports of Canada, suggested the move was due to poor ticket sales, noting that only between 11,900 and 15,000 tickets had been sold before the venue change.

Former WWF executive Bruce Prichard suggested both reasons were accurate. He noted that even with a sold-out Coliseum, the scale of the event would have required an immense security budget to protect fans and wrestlers from potential outside attacks or local crime.

A palpable sense of tension filled the show, which utilised the 'Superstars and Stripes Forever' slogan and abundant patriotic symbols, such as red, white, and blue flags and Willie Nelson singing 'America the Beautiful'. The headlining match featured Hulk Hogan overcoming Sgt. Slaughter to win the WWF Championship, a plotline linked to actual Middle East conflicts. Hogan had famously predicted that Iraq would surrender once he defeated Slaughter. Beyond the main event, the show marked significant career milestones, including the WrestleMania debut of The Undertaker—the start of his famous winning streak—and a high-stakes retirement match between Randy Savage and the Ultimate Warrior, which concluded with a reunion between Savage and Miss Elizabeth.
