From high school acting to a lifetime of Canadian television excellence
In short: Before he was a staple of period crime drama, Yannick Bisson was a teenager responding to a newspaper ad. His journey from a Montreal native to an award-winning actor and director reveals a career built on versatility, from action series to children's animation.
Born in Montreal on May 16, 1969, Yannick Bisson's entry into the industry was a family affair. After moving to Toronto as a teenager, his father encouraged him to respond to a newspaper advertisement seeking child actors. He secured his initial significant part playing in the 1984 CBC weekly film Hockey Night, featuring Megan Follows and Rick Moranis.
Bisson's career spans several decades and genres. In the late 1980s, he starred in the series Learning the Ropes, and by the mid-1990s, he moved into action with the syndicated series High Tide. His work has taken him from Los Angeles back to Vancouver, British and even to roles in American dramas like Showtime's Soul Food, where he played attorney Brian Tedrow between 2000 and 2004.
He is perhaps most widely recognized for his long-running role as Detective William Murdoch in the CBC series Murdoch Mysteries, a role he has held since 2008. Beyond acting, Bisson has expanded into directing, making his debut with the show's fourth-season episode "Buffalo Shuffle." His industry contributions have been recognized with the 2016 Canadian Screen Award Fan's Choice Award and the 2017 ACTRA Toronto Award of Excellence for his lifetime of work.
Personal life and professional life often intersect for Bisson. He married Chantal Craig, a former actress and model, in 1990. Their family has even appeared on screen; his daughters have both had roles in Murdoch Mysteries. When not acting, Bisson has worked as a builder to support his family and is an avid collector of bicycles.
