From Canadian actor to reality TV mainstay: the multifaceted life of Dean McDermott
In short: He transitioned from playing a constable on Due South to hosting culinary competitions. While his career spans film, television, and professional cooking, his personal life has been marked by high-profile marriages, public scandals, and a sudden shift from Canadian roots to American citizenship.
Born in Toronto on November 16, 1966, Dean McDermott’s career is a study in professional versatility. While many recognize him as a reality television personality, his early work included roles in series such as Due South, where he played Constable Renfield Turnbull. His film credits include appearances in Open Range and Irvine Welsh's Ecstasy, alongside various television movies like Santa Baby 2: Christmas Maybe.
Beyond acting, McDermott is a professionally trained chef. His culinary career gained momentum in 2013 after triumphing during the second series of Rachael vs. Guy: Celebrity Cook-Off. As a member of 'Team Guy', his skills earned him the position of Chopped Canada presenter between January 2014 and March 2015. He also authored the cookbook The Gourmet Dad, designed to make meals more appealing to children.
McDermott's personal life has been frequently documented in the media. His marriage to actress Tori Spelling, which began in Fiji on May 7, 2006, faced significant public scrutiny following reports of infidelity in December 2013. The couple's relationship was also marked by financial struggles, including a $39,000 debt to American Express reported in 2016. After 18 years together, the pair announced their separation in June 2023. A divorce filing in March 2024 cited irreconcilable differences, with the legal process concluding in November 2025, resulting in joint legal custody of their four minor children.
His life has also seen significant physical and civic transitions. In 2010, he survived a serious dirt bike accident that resulted in a punctured and collapsed lung. That same year, he officially became an American citizen during a ceremony in Los Angeles on August 21.
