A massive outdoor spectacle that transformed the Florida economy
In short: WrestleMania XXIV was more than just a wrestling event; it was a high-definition, outdoor phenomenon. Held at Orlando's Citrus Bowl, this 2008 supercard broke records for gate revenue and pay-per-view sales, leaving a massive footprint on the local economy and the history of professional wrestling.
Taking place on March 30, 2008, WrestleMania XXIV marked the first time the flagship WWE event was held in Florida. It was only the second time in the company's history that the event was held entirely outdoors, following WrestleMania IX in 1993. To manage the elements, WWE utilized a custom steel rig with a tarpaulin roof over the ring, though rain did fall briefly during the Money in the Bank ladder match.
The scale of the production was immense. The entrance stage featured custom-built steel beams from Belgium, and the pyrotechnics were ten times the amount used on Raw, with fireworks shooting up to 2,000 feet from nearby lakes. The event was also a technical milestone, serving as the first WrestleMania broadcast in high definition and the first WWE show released on Blu-ray.
The event's financial impact was significant. It set a gate record for the Citrus Bowl with US$5.85 million in ticket sales. An Enigma Research Corporation study estimated the event brought approximately $51.5 million into the local economy, surpassing a $25 million projection, and generated $1.8 million in local tax revenue. Furthermore, pay-per-view viewership exceeded one million, producing $23.8 million in total earnings.
The card featured nine matches, including a triple threat match where Randy Orton retained the WWE Championship against Triple H and John Cena. Other notable bouts included The Undertaker defeating Edge for the World Heavyweight Championship and a career-threatening match where Shawn Michaels defeated Ric Flair, leading to Flair's retirement from active wrestling.
