In short: When John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John recorded the iconic duet for the 1978 film Grease, the director, Randal Kleiser, famously disliked it. He felt the song clashed with the established fifties style of the original musical. Yet, it became a global phenomenon, selling over 15 million copies worldwide.

Written and produced by John Farrar specifically for the film, the song was not part of the original stage musical. It replaced a number called All Choked Up, which was a pastiche of Elvis Presley’s All Shook Up. Kleiser believed the new track failed to mesh with the score composed by Warren Casey and Jim Jacobs, but the public disagreed. Record World described the result as a frantic, up-tempo duet that left listeners breathless.

The song’s success was immediate and massive. In the United States, it topped the Billboard Hot 100 and was certified Platinum by July 18, 1978, for shipments exceeding 2 million copies. Its performance in the United Kingdom was even more striking: it held the number one spot on the UK Singles Chart for nine weeks during the summer of 1978, months before the film even premiered in the country. As of 2018, it remains the fifth best-selling single in British history, with 2 million copies sold domestically.

The song’s cultural footprint has proven remarkably durable. It has been covered by artists ranging from The Beautiful South to Doja Cat, and even featured in a 2024 Marvel Cinematic Universe film, Deadpool & Wolverine. Beyond music, the song’s title inspired a reality game show, and it has been adapted into various international versions, including a German parody and a Swedish translation. Despite the initial skepticism of the film's director, the track successfully defined the cinematic transformation of its protagonists, Danny Zuko and Sandy Olsson, cementing its place as a pop culture staple for decades.
