Spider-Man returns to Disney+ in 2027 with a new, complex power dynamic

Produced by Marvel Studios Animation, the upcoming season serves as a continuation of the showrunner Jeff Trammell's vision for a multi-season narrative arc. While the project was initially titled Sophomore Year when it was first announced in July 2022, the series was rebranded to its current name by December 2023. The production process was extensive, with development concluding in June 2026 and scripts finalized by January 2025. To bridge the gap between the first and second seasons, Marvel Comics is releasing a four-issue prequel series starting in December 2026.
The creative direction for the second season emphasizes a visual style that mimics a living comic book, utilizing 3D cel-shaded animation to evoke the classic aesthetic of early Amazing Spider-Man issues by artists like Steve Ditko and John Romita Sr. Behind the scenes, the writing process saw a significant expansion of the team; due to his heavy workload, Trammell personally penned only two episodes, leaving the remainder of the 56-page story outline to be developed by his expanded staff.
Narratively, the season shifts from establishing the world to deepening the conflicts between key figures. Marvel executive Brad Winderbaum highlighted the evolving relationships between Peter Parker and the Osborn family as a central tension, noting that the season explores a sophisticated power scaling where characters constantly challenge one another. Alongside returning favorites like Daredevil—who now sports his traditional red attire—the cast will welcome new additions including Ghost-Spider, Venom, the Lizard, and Rhino, further populating the hero's rogues gallery.
