The hidden cost of conformity in the town of Seabrook
In short: In the planned community of Seabrook, uniformity is the highest law. But behind the bright pinks and greens of this musical world lies a strict social hierarchy, enforced by walls, patrols, and even electromagnetic pulses designed to suppress the very nature of its citizens.
Fifty years ago, an explosion at the Seabron Power Plant fundamentally altered the landscape of Seabrook, turning half the population into mindless, brain-eating zombies. To maintain order, the surviving residents established a quarantine, separating the zombies into a specific territory known as Zombietown. To prevent the zombies from succumbing to their cravings, the government implemented Z-Bands—bracelets that deliver electromagnetic pulses to suppress the urge to eat brains.
The social structure of Seabrook is defined by rigid traditions and intense uniformity. This is most visible in the lives of the students at Seabrook High, where the cheerleading squad, led by Bucky Buchanan, embodies the town's strict social norms. The tension between the human and zombie populations is central to the story, as characters like the cheerleader Addison Wells struggle with the pressure to conform. Addison even went so far as to wear a blonde wig to hide her naturally white hair, a feature that would have been rejected by the community.
While the 2018 film was a massive commercial success, drawing over 2.5 million viewers during its initial February 2018 premiere, it also sparked discussions about prejudice. Critics noted that the film explores stereotyping on both sides of the divide, driven largely by the adults in power, such as the Mayor, Missy, and the Chief of the Zombie Patrol, Dale. The franchise has since expanded significantly, with sequels released in 2020 and 2022, and a fourth installment, Zombies 4: Dawn of the Vampires, scheduled for release in July 2025.
