How a 1910 wool mill built a vertical luxury empire
In short: From a small Piedmontese textile factory to a global powerhouse, Zegna has mastered the art of total control. By owning everything from the sheep to the finished suit, the group ensures that every thread meets the exacting standards of high-end luxury fashion.
The Zegna Group’s dominance is rooted in a strategy of verticalization, a process of controlling the entire value chain. This 'Filiera'—a unique, company-owned entity—integrates Italian textile producers with luxury manufacturing. This approach allows the group to oversee every step, from the initial purchase of raw materials to the final sale of finished products.
This control extends far beyond simple fabric production. The group has aggressively acquired specialized companies to secure its supply chain. In 2014, Zegna acquired Achill, an Australian wool farm with a flock of approximately 12,500 sheep. In 2019, it secured a 65% stake in Dondi Jersey, a manufacturer of Italian jersey fabrics, and in 2021, it acquired a 40% share in the Italian spinning mill Tessitura Biagioli Modesto, which specializes in cashmere production.
The group's portfolio has expanded significantly through strategic acquisitions and brand extensions. In 2018, Zegna purchased an 85% stake in the New York-based brand Thom Browne at a $500 million valuation. More recently, in 2023, the group acquired the license for the Tom Ford brands from Estée Lauder, covering everything from menswear to home textiles for a twenty-year term.
Today, the Zegna Group is a public company listed on the New York Stock Exchange, having gone public on December 20, 2021, with a valuation of $3.1 billion. Despite this, the Zegna family maintains significant control, holding 60.3% of the capital through direct ownership and the family company, Monterubello SS.
