In short: Design is rarely just about aesthetics; it is a method of preservation. Whether it is a 1:12 scale recreation of an 18th-century dining room or a high-tech tribute to a 1974 sports car, these objects serve as physical anchors for history that might otherwise fade.

The preservation of history often requires a shift in scale. In the 1930s, Narcissa Niblack Thorne created the Thorne Rooms, a series of miniature interiors at a 1:12 scale. These were not mere toys but scholarly reconstructions of historical design. For example, her Maryland Dining Room (c. 1940) replicates the Hammond-Harwood house in Annapolis. Thorne balanced historical accuracy with artistic interpretation, meticulously imitating Palladian style ornaments, carved chimney breastwork, and coffered paneling to evoke the atmosphere of the 1770s. While Thorne looked backward to the 18th century, modern industrial design uses similar principles of lineage to project forward. The Hyundai N Vision 74 is a battery electric concept that draws its styling from the 1974 Pony Coupe Concept. While the original 1974 model was a static display at the Turin Motor Show—never reaching production due to a lack of a suitable engine—it remains a vital blueprint for Hyundai's identity.

Design chief SangYup Lee began sketching the N Vision 74 as early as 2016 to celebrate the brand's roots. Both projects highlight the tension between fantasy and fact. Thorne used museum examples of 1790s furniture to populate her rooms, creating a 'stage set' that feels both real and imagined. Similarly, the N Vision 74 functions as a 'Rolling Lab,' blending the wedge-shaped aesthetics of the 1970s with modern hydrogen fuel cell and electric traction motor technology. In both cases, design serves as a bridge: one preserves the domestic past, while the other preserves a brand's heritage in a changing technological landscape.
