In short: The Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart is more than a storage space for vintage cars. Its architecture is a physical manifestation of engineering logic, using a unique cloverleaf concept to house over 160 vehicles within a compact, geometrically complex footprint.

Opened on May 19, 2006, the museum was designed by UNStudio. The building's core identity is rooted in a cloverleaf concept, which utilizes three overlapping circles with the center removed. This specific geometry creates a triangular atrium intended to recall the shape of a Wankel engine, seamlessly weaving the brand's mechanical heritage into the very fabric of the structure. The project was shaped by a unique collaboration where exhibition designer HG Merz was hired before the architectural competition even began in 2001. This ensured that the building's form and its contents were developed in tandem. The site is located directly outside the main gate of the Daimler factory. It serves as a primary home for the history of the Mercedes-Benz brand and its associated companies.

The museum faces a significant spatial challenge: providing 16,500 square metres of exhibition space on a footprint of only 4,800 square metres. To achieve this, the architects employed a "double helix" interior. The museum houses a diverse collection of more than 160 vehicles. Some of these pieces date back to the earliest periods of motorcar engine development. The Mercedes-Benz Classic Center of Fellbach looks after these vintage machines to keep them in excellent shape.

This design serves a dual purpose. Structurally, it maximizes the available volume; conceptually, it facilitates the exhibition layout by splitting the experience into "legend rooms" and "collections.", The double helix layout allows for two distinct tour paths that can be merged at any point during a visit. Visitors can also access free audio guides in multiple languages. In 2023 alone, the site welcomed 800,245 guests. Additionally, guests have the option to tour the nearby Untertürkheim engine factory, which is responsible for producing many of the company's diesel engines.
