Can an all-zombie idol group truly save a struggling Japanese prefecture from impending disaster?
In short: In a bizarre twist on the idol genre, seven legendary women from different eras are resurrected as zombies to revitalize Saga Prefecture. Managed by a manic necromancer, this undead troupe must hide their true nature while performing to save their home from a prophesied catastrophe that threatens the land.
The series Zombie Land Saga centers on Kotaro Tatsumi, a necromancer who resurrects seven women from various points in Japanese history to form the idol group Franchouchou. His stated goal is to revitalize the declining idol business in Saga Prefecture. However, the stakes are far higher than simple economic recovery; as revealed in the second season, Revenge, Kotaro’s efforts are intended to protect the land from a literal, prophesied disaster.
The members of Franchouchou are a diverse collection of historical figures. They include Sakura Minamoto, a high school student who died in 2008; Saki Nikaido, a 1990s biker gang leader; Ai Mizuno, a 2000s idol; Junko Konno, a Shōwa-era star; Yugiri, an oiran from the 19th century; Lily Hoshikawa, a child actress; and Tae Yamada, the only member who has yet to regain human consciousness. To avoid persecution, the group uses heavy makeup and aliases to conceal their zombified states from the public.
The narrative explores the personal histories of these women, often contrasting their past lives with their new, undead reality. For instance, Lily, who died in 2011, finds comfort in her zombified state as a way to remain a child forever, avoiding the pressures of puberty. Meanwhile, characters like the mysterious bartender at Bar New Jofuku—whose immortality is tied to the status of Saga—hint at deeper, supernatural connections within the region. The group's journey is not just about fame, but about navigating the complexities of their second chance at life while fulfilling a cryptic mission to save their prefecture.
Produced by MAPPA, Avex Pictures, and Cygames, the franchise has expanded beyond its 2018 and 2021 television seasons to include a manga adaptation and a 2025 film titled Zombie Land Saga: Yumeginga Paradise. The show balances comedy and drama, using the absurdity of an undead idol group to examine themes of identity, memory, and the enduring nature of one's dreams.
