How a 1977 underwater thriller turned a wet T-shirt into a box office goldmine
In short: The Deep was a massive 1977 commercial juggernaut that pioneered underwater cinematography. While critics panned its narrative, the film became a cultural phenomenon through an aggressive marketing blitz and an iconic, controversial image of Jacqueline Bisset that producer Peter Guber credited for his personal fortune.
Directed by Peter Yates and based on Peter Benchley’s 1976 novel, The Deep follows a couple who discover a cache of morphine from a sunken World War II vessel, the Goliath, while diving near Bermuda. Their find attracts the attention of a drug kingpin, leading to a dangerous race to recover both the illicit cargo and a deeper, ancient Spanish treasure.
The production was a technical milestone, utilizing the Petermar camera system and massive underwater lighting rigs to capture the ocean in Panavision. To achieve realism, the cast underwent scuba training, filming sequences in the British Virgin Islands and Australia. Despite the technical ambition, the film’s narrative was often dismissed as juvenile, holding a 38% rating on Rotten Tomatoes today.
Marketing was the film's true engine. Columbia Pictures spent millions on a saturation campaign, including television spots and print ads in men’s magazines featuring a provocative still of Bisset. This strategy was so pervasive that research suggested the average viewer had already seen 15 minutes of the film before entering the theater. By opening day, the studio aimed for 200 million people to have encountered promotional material for the movie.
The film ultimately grossed over $100 million worldwide, becoming the eighth highest-grossing film of 1977 in North America. Despite this success, the production was marked by internal friction, including Bisset’s objection to the unauthorized use of her image and Guber’s later complaints regarding profit participation. It remains a curious artifact of 1970s Hollywood, where high-concept spectacle and aggressive branding often eclipsed critical acclaim.
