A celebrated filmmaker faced plagiarism accusations after his film mirrored a student's documentary project.
In short: Asghar Farhadi's 2021 drama A Hero won the Grand Prix at Cannes, but its success was overshadowed by a legal battle. A former student, Azadeh Masihzadeh, claimed the film plagiarized her documentary about a man who returned lost money, sparking a complex dispute over intellectual property and public domain.
The controversy centers on the origins of the film's narrative. In 2014, while attending a documentary workshop taught by Farhadi, Masihzadeh researched the story of Mohammad Reza Shokri, a prisoner who returned a lost bag of cash. Masihzadeh produced a documentary titled All Winners, All Losers, which won a prize at the 2018 Shiraz Arts Festival. She later alleged that Farhadi, who had mentored her during the project, appropriated the story for his own film, A Hero, which was produced in 2020.
The legal conflict escalated in 2021 when Masihzadeh accused Farhadi of intellectual property theft. Farhadi countered with defamation claims, asserting that the story of Shokri was already public knowledge. The dispute involved multiple court appearances and conflicting testimonies from other students. In March 2022, a magistrate initially found merit in Masihzadeh's claims and indicted Farhadi, though this was not a final conviction. The case highlighted the blurry line between inspiration and plagiarism, particularly when dealing with real-life events.
By March 2024, the legal tide shifted when a court acquitted Farhadi of plagiarism. The verdict relied on an expert panel of University of Tehran professors and art specialists, who concluded that the events depicted in Masihzadeh’s documentary had been widely reported in the media and thus belonged to the public domain. Despite the legal resolution, the case remains a notable example of the tensions surrounding creative ownership and the ethical responsibilities of mentors in the arts.
