In short: Jafar Panahi is one of the few directors to win top prizes at Europe’s three major film festivals, despite being banned from filmmaking by his own government. From smuggling a film out of Iran inside a cake to directing from a taxi, his career proves that creative vision survives state censorship.

Born in 1960, Jafar Panahi emerged from the Iranian New Wave as a master of neorealism, often focusing on the lives of women and the marginalized. His early work, such as The White Balloon (1995), earned him the Caméra d’Or at Cannes. However, his films soon took a political turn, with works like The Circle (2000) and Offside (2006) directly challenging the social and gendered structures of contemporary Iran. These depictions of life under state control frequently led to bans and legal confrontations with the Iranian government.

The conflict intensified in 2010 when Panahi was sentenced to six years in prison and hit with a 20-year ban on filmmaking, traveling, and giving interviews. Rather than silencing him, these restrictions forced a radical evolution in his craft. He began producing films clandestinely, often using a metacinematic approach that blurred the lines between fiction and his own reality. This Is Not a Film (2011) was famously smuggled out of his Tehran apartment inside a USB stick hidden in a cake, while Closed Curtain (2013) and Taxi (2015) utilized his own home and a dashboard camera to circumvent state surveillance.

Panahi’s resilience has been met with both international acclaim and persistent state pressure. In 2022, he was detained while seeking information about a fellow director, leading to the enforcement of his 2010 prison sentence, though he was released in 2023. By 2025, he achieved the rare feat of winning the Palme d’Or at Cannes for It Was Just an Accident. Despite his global recognition and an Academy Award nomination for his screenplay, he continues to face legal jeopardy, including a one-year prison sentence issued in absentia while he was abroad promoting his work.
