How a 19th-century novel became a record-breaking Turkish television phenomenon
In short: Aşk-ı Memnu, a modern adaptation of an 1899 novel, captivated Turkey with its intense portrayal of a forbidden love triangle. The series, which aired from 2008 to 2010, became a cultural juggernaut, culminating in a finale that drew nearly 40 percent of the entire Turkish population to their screens.
The narrative centers on Adnan Ziyagil, a wealthy businessman living in an Istanbul mansion on the Bosporus. His life is disrupted when he marries the much younger Bihter Yöreoğlu. The domestic stability of the household, which includes his children Nihal and Bülent and his orphaned nephew Behlül, begins to crumble as an illicit affair develops between Bihter and Behlül. This forbidden romance, which gives the show its title, serves as the catalyst for the tragic unraveling of the Ziyagil family.
The series is a modern reimagining of Halit Ziya Uşaklıgil’s 1899 novel. While a previous adaptation aired in 1975, the 2008 version achieved unprecedented success. Its popularity grew steadily over two seasons, with viewership figures climbing from 9.6 million for the pilot to a staggering 27.1 million for the 79th and final episode. This record-breaking finale remains the highest-watched television episode in Turkish history.
Beyond Turkey, the show achieved immense international reach, finding a particularly massive audience in Pakistan, where it was viewed by over 90 million people. Its global footprint includes dubbing in languages such as Urdu, Persian, Arabic, Hindi, Portuguese, and Amharic. The story's enduring appeal has also sparked various international remakes, including the American Pasión prohibida and the Romanian Fructul oprit, the latter of which faced legal challenges for its close adherence to the original series' scenes.
