A smaller, sharper Westeros: the unlikely buddy comedy of Dunk and Egg
In short: Moving away from the sprawling power struggles of Game of Thrones, this prequel focuses on the intimate, wandering journey of a lowborn knight and his royal squire. It is a grounded, character-driven shift that trades epic wars for the personal stakes of a hedge knight navigating the Seven Kingdoms.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms marks the third television entry in the Game of Thrones franchise. Created by George R. R. Martin and Ira Parker, the series adapts the Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas, set 90 years before the events of A Song of Ice and Fire. The narrative follows Ser Duncan the Tall, a humble hedge knight, and his young squire, Prince Aegon Targaryen, known as Egg.
The path to production was long and complex. Martin originally pitched the concept to HBO in 2016, but the network initially favored the story that became House of the Dragon. For years, Martin expressed hesitation about adapting the novellas, fearing the show would outpace his writing, as had happened with the original series. He even once suggested waiting until the entire saga—which he envisions spanning twelve stories—was complete.
The first season, which premiered in January 2026, consists of six episodes and covers the initial published novellas. While HBO currently plans to adapt only the three existing stories, writer Ira Parker has outlined a long-term vision to eventually bring all twelve planned tales to the screen. The production has already been renewed for a second season, expected in 2027, which will adapt The Sworn Sword and introduce new characters like Lady Rohanne Webber.
Critical reception has been largely positive, with the show praised for its shift toward a buddy-comedy tone. Unlike its predecessors, the series leans into the personal dynamic between its leads, Peter Claffey and Dexter Sol Ansell. By focusing on the smaller, human moments of the realm, the show offers a distinct perspective on the world of Westeros, proving that the franchise can thrive outside the shadow of massive, throne-seeking conflicts.
