A night of historic milestones and record-breaking cinematic achievements
In short: The 98th Academy Awards delivered more than just trophies. From the first-ever award for casting to legendary gaps in nominations, the 2026 ceremony rewrote the history books, proving that even in a changing industry, the magic of the silver screen remains unmatched.
The 98th Academy Awards, held on March 15, 2026, at the Dolby Theatre, was defined by several historic firsts. The Academy introduced a new competitive category to honor casting directors, a move decades in the making after a 1999 rejection. The film 'One Battle After Another' emerged as a major victor, securing six awards including Best Picture. Meanwhile, 'Sinners' made history with a record sixteen nominations, ultimately taking home four trophies.
The ceremony also celebrated individual milestones that spanned generations. Michael B. Jordan joined Lee Marvin as only the second actor to win an Oscar for playing a dual role. In a display of youthful talent, 30-year-old Timothée Chalamet became the youngest person since Marlon Brando to earn three acting nominations, while also becoming the youngest nominee for both acting and producing in a single year. Conversely, the night honored longevity, as Amy Madigan set a record for the longest gap between nominations, spanning 40 years since her 1985 debut in 'Twice in a Lifetime'.
Technical and diverse achievements were also at the forefront. Autumn Durald Arkapaw made history as the first Black and Filipino winner in the Best Cinematography category. The night also saw a rare moment of parity, as 'The Singers' and 'Two People Exchanging Saliva' shared the award for Best Live Action Short Film, marking only the seventh tie in the ceremony's history. Despite a 9% dip in US viewership compared to the previous year, the telecast still reached an average of 17.86 million viewers.
