In short: Paul Schrader envisioned Nick Nolte as the lead for his 1997 neo-noir crime drama long before production began. Despite Nolte's early interest, the project faced significant delays due to budget constraints and the actor's own hesitation. The result is a haunting, bleak character study that remains a career-defining performance.

Based on the 1989 novel by Russell Banks, Affliction follows Wade Whitehouse, a small-town New Hampshire policeman spiraling into violence and obsession. Director Paul Schrader, who adapted the screenplay, first offered the role to Nolte five years before filming commenced. At the time, Nolte was a bankable star following 1991 hits like The Prince of Tides and Cape Fear, making him initially unaffordable for the production. Nolte also admitted he was not ready to inhabit the character's darkness until years later.

The film’s production, which began in Quebec in February 1997, relied on intense character dynamics. James Coburn was cast as Wade’s abusive father, Glen, specifically because he could physically and emotionally dominate Nolte. To emphasize the cyclical nature of their trauma, Sissy Spacek’s husband, Jack Fisk, suggested the characters lick salt off their hands—a visual motif highlighting their shared, destructive lineage. Willem Dafoe, who initially expressed interest in playing Wade, ultimately portrayed the narrator, Rolfe Whitehouse.

Upon its release, the film garnered critical acclaim for its unflinching portrayal of an abused soul. While Schrader’s previous work often concluded with a sense of moral grace, he noted that Affliction intentionally lacks such a resolution, remaining bleak until the final frame. The film earned significant recognition, including an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for Coburn and a Best Actor nomination for Nolte, cementing its status as a standout in the neo-noir genre.
