From Broadway stages to crime scenes: the multifaceted career of Andy Karl
In short: Known primarily as a powerhouse in musical theatre, Andy Karl has navigated everything from Broadway debuts to recurring roles on Law & Order: SVU. His journey from a student of voice and music to an award-winning performer reveals the grit required to master the spotlight.
After being born Andrew Karl Cesewski in Baltimore, Maryland, on 27 August 1974, the performer later chose his current name to pay tribute to his deceased great-grandfather, Andrew Karl, a fireman from Baltimore. His path to professional acting was catalyzed by a college director who recognized his potential while he was studying voice and music at Towson University. This early training laid the foundation for a prolific career that includes significant Broadway presence and television work.
Karl's stage career is defined by versatility and high-profile roles. He made his Broadway debut in 2000 as a replacement in Saturday Night Fever, later returning to the production as Tony Manero for its first national tour. Three Tony Award nominations were earned by him for his work in On the Twentieth Century (2015), Rocky (2014), and Groundhog Day (2017). His performance in the original London production of Groundhog Day was particularly acclaimed, earning him a Laurence Olivier Award in 2017.
Beyond the musical stage, Karl expanded his repertoire into television, appearing as Sergeant Mike Dodds on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit between 2015 and 2016. His physical commitment to his roles is notable; for his 2014 performance as Rocky Balboa, he gained 12 pounds of muscle to meet the demands of the role. His career continues to evolve, with upcoming engagements including a 2025 role in Moulin Rouge! and a 2026 appearance in the revival of Little Shop of Horrors.
In his personal life, Karl was married to performer Orfeh for 23 years before their separation in May 2024. He has since entered a relationship with his Groundhog Day co-star, Elise McCann, and the pair announced their engagement on July 28, 2025.
