In short: Born in Salem and raised in Washington, Justin Kirk evolved from a teenage musician in New York bands to a celebrated stage and screen actor. Best known for his roles in Angels in America and Weeds, his career spans decades of diverse performances across Broadway, television, and major feature films.

Justin Kirk was born on May 28, 1969, in Salem, Oregon. His early life was marked by geographic shifts; he spent his childhood in Union, Washington, where he attended a grade school located on a Native American reservation. When he was 13 years old, his family relocated to Minneapolis, Minnesota. It was there that he attended high school and began honing his craft at the Children's Theatre Company, setting the stage for his future in the performing arts.

After graduating, Kirk moved to New York City. Before fully committing to acting, he explored music, playing guitar in several bands during the early 1990s, most notably The Dimestore Darlings. He eventually pursued formal training, completing a two-year conservatory program at the Circle in the Square Theatre School. His professional acting career began on the off-Broadway stage, with early credits including productions like The Applicant and Loose Ends, before he made his Broadway debut in Frank Gilroy's Any Given Day at the Longacre Theatre.

Kirk achieved significant recognition for his portrayal of Prior Walter in the 2003 HBO miniseries Angels in America, earning a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor. He later became widely known for his role as Andy Botwin in the Showtime series Weeds, which ran from 2005 to 2012. His career has remained eclectic, encompassing roles in television series such as Manhattan, Kidding, Perry Mason, and Succession, alongside film appearances in projects ranging from the 1997 adaptation of Love! Valour! Compassion! to the 2018 political drama Vice.

Throughout his career, Kirk has navigated the transition between stage and screen with ease. He has appeared in numerous plays, including Terrence McNally’s Love! Valour! Compassion! and Jon Robin Baitz’s Other Desert Cities. While some of his television ventures, such as the 2012 NBC sitcom Animal Practice, were short-lived, his consistent presence in critically acclaimed projects has solidified his reputation as a versatile American actor.
