The 1999 blockbuster that turned a contract marriage into a commercial triumph
In short: In 1999, a high-stakes romantic drama about a one-year marriage contract captured the Indian box office. Starring Anil Kapoor and Kajol, the film bypassed traditional cinematic gimmicks to focus on raw emotion, eventually grossing over ₹36 crore worldwide and redefining its lead actors' screen images.
Directed by Satish Kaushik, Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hain (translated as 'I Live in Your Heart') was a remake of the 1996 Telugu film Pavitra Bandham. Unlike Kaushik's previous works, which relied on reincarnation or elaborate costumes, this film utilized a contemporary backdrop to emphasize character feelings. The narrative follows Megha, a woman facing financial hardship, who enters a one-year contract marriage with the industrialist Vijay to satisfy his father, Vishwanath. The plot is driven by Vishwanath's attempt to use sweets to persuade his son to marry. The central conflict arises when Megha realizes the marriage will be annulled if Vijay does not fall in love within the year.
The film's production was a significant undertaking for producer D. Ramanaidu, marking his return to Hindi cinema after a hiatus following 1995's Taqdeerwala. With a budget of approximately ₹6.25 crore, the production spanned locations in India and Switzerland. While the story touched on the then-unusual concept of prenuptial agreements, critics were divided on its execution. Some reviewers, such as Sharmila Taliculam, found the plot somewhat conventional, while others praised the intense performances. The film's musical score was composed by Anu Malik, with lyrics penned by Sameer. The soundtrack, featuring various prominent playback singers, was released by T-Series in late 1998.
The film's commercial success was undeniable. Released on 22 January 1999, it faced stiff competition from films like Rishi Kapoor's Aa Ab Laut Chalen. Despite this, it earned ₹36.65 crore globally, making it one of the highest-grossing female-led films of that year. For the actors, the impact was personal: Anil Kapoor used the role to avoid typecasting, while Kajol earned numerous Best Actress nominations across platforms like the Filmfare and Zee Cine Awards. On its opening day, the movie earned ₹57 lakh across 190 Indian screens. It maintained a strong presence in theaters for a run of 25 weeks.
