A surreal urban landscape where the ordinary meets the decidedly not-quite-ordinary
In short: In the vibrant world of Keiichi Arawi's manga City, the Mont Blanc Trio navigates a life filled with eccentric characters. From university sophomores to spontaneous freshmen, these stories unfold in a setting where even a simple smile can have extraordinary consequences.
Written and illustrated by Keiichi Arawi, the manga City began its serialization in September 2016 in the seinen magazine Morning. The series, which spans 15 tankōbon volumes, concludes its run in October 2025. The narrative centers on the Mont Blanc Trio: Midori Nagumo, a 20-year-old university sophomore and waitress; Wako Izumi, an 18-year-old aspiring photographer; and Ayumo Niikura, a spontaneous university sophomore.
Together, they reside in the Mokumesei Manor, an apartment complex owned by Tsurubishi's mother-in-law. Beyond the trio, the city is populated by a diverse cast of characters, including Tsurubishi Makabe, the head chef of a Western-style family restaurant, and his family. The social fabric is further woven by the Adatara family, who run a local liquor store.
The series is notable for its connection to Arawi's earlier work, Nichijou; both series share the same universe. This connection was brought to television by Kyoto Animation, which produced the anime adaptation, City the Animation. Produced by Kyoto Animation, the anime aired from July to September 2025 on Tokyo MX. This production marked a significant milestone for the studio, representing its first non-sequel anime project in six years. It also serves as the studio's second adaptation of an Arawi manga, following the 2011 release of the Nichijou anime. The series explores the lives of these characters as they encounter various strange situations and unusual people within the urban landscape of City.
