In short: Imagine waking up on a rooftop in a world made entirely of interconnected high-rises. There is no ground, and masked killers hunt anyone who tries to survive. This is the premise of a Japanese manga and anime series that explores a terrifying, vertical struggle for escape and human connection.

The narrative centers on Yuri Honjo, a high school student suddenly thrust into a bizarre, suspended reality. This world consists of endless skyscrapers linked by bridges, with no accessible surface below. The environment is hostile, populated by mysterious figures wearing white masks who act as lethal predators. Yuri must navigate this landscape to find her brother, Rika, who is also stranded in the same domain. Their primary objective is to locate a way out of this vertical prison while avoiding the masked threats.

The story originated as a manga created by author Tsuina Miura and artist Takahiro Oba. It ran on the Manga Box digital platform from December 2013 until April 2019, eventually spanning twenty-one collected volumes. A follow-up series, titled High-Rise Invasion Arrive, continued the saga from July 2019 to April 2021. In 2021, the franchise expanded into an original net animation produced by the studio Zero-G, which premiered globally on Netflix.

The series introduces various characters with distinct roles, such as God Candidates who command entities known as Angels. These figures, like the character Aikawa who controls thirty subordinates, add layers of complexity to the power dynamics of the world. While some critics have noted the series' provocative visual style and uneven pacing, others have highlighted its compelling portrayal of antagonists. Ultimately, it remains a dark exploration of survival, trust, and the desperate search for family within an impossible, high-altitude trap.
