The Russian mutant who became a living weapon to save the world from disease.
In short: Piotr Rasputin, known as Colossus, is a gentle artist who reluctantly transforms into organic steel to battle for humanity. Born on a Siberian collective farm, this X-Man has endured family tragedy, resurrection, and the burden of a dark ancestral legacy, all while struggling to maintain his peaceful, virtuous nature.
Created by Len Wein and Dave Cockrum in 1975, Colossus was designed to be the X-Men's powerhouse. His metallic armor, which allows him to withstand immense physical force, was a practical solution to the team's need for a strong defender. While his creator initially envisioned him with bare legs for aesthetic consistency, the final design utilized unstable molecules to ensure his costume remained intact during his transformations. His Russian heritage was a product of the era's geopolitical climate, specifically the interest in détente, and his surname was chosen for its immediate recognizability.
The character's life is defined by profound loss and self-sacrifice. Raised on the Ust-Ordynsky Collective near Lake Baikal, Peter Rasputin was recruited by Professor Charles Xavier after manifesting his powers while saving his sister, Illyana. His journey is marked by the tragic deaths of his parents and siblings, and his own death during the effort to cure the Legacy Virus. By injecting himself with a lethal, airborne version of the cure, he sacrificed his life to eradicate the disease, only to be later resurrected by the medical company Benetech, which had captured his body to exploit his blood for their own mutant-cure research.
Beyond his physical strength, Colossus is defined by his internal conflict. He is a talented artist who views combat as a heavy responsibility rather than a calling. His history includes complex relationships, such as his long-standing bond with Kitty Pryde, and his brief, disillusioning stint with Magneto's Acolytes. Even his lineage is fraught with mystery; the 2006 mini-series Colossus: Bloodlines revealed that his family descended from Grigori Rasputin, suggesting that his power is part of a larger, potentially dangerous mystical inheritance. Despite these burdens, he remains a steadfast protector, often serving as the moral anchor for the X-Men.
