How a cancelled supernatural detective series found a second life in a shared universe
In short: NBC cancelled Constantine after only one season in 2015, leaving fans disappointed and the titular occult detective’s future uncertain. Yet, the character refused to stay buried. Through persistent fan support and strategic crossovers, the enigmatic exorcist transitioned from a failed network experiment into a recurring fixture of the Arrowverse franchise.
Developed by Daniel Cerone and David S. Goyer, Constantine premiered on NBC in October 2014. Starring Matt Ryan as the irreverent, chain-smoking occult detective John Constantine, the series followed his struggle to protect humanity from the 'Rising Darkness' while seeking redemption for his past sins. Despite a 72% critic approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the show struggled with live viewership numbers. NBC ultimately declined a second season in May 2015, citing high production costs and a desire to prioritize new pilots.
The cancellation did not mark the end for Ryan’s portrayal. Following intense fan advocacy, producers successfully negotiated for the character to appear in the fourth season of Arrow, an episode titled 'Haunted'. This appearance retroactively integrated the cancelled NBC series into the Arrowverse continuity. Marc Guggenheim, an Arrow showrunner, noted that the crossover felt natural, allowing the production team to extend Ryan’s run as the character beyond the original thirteen episodes.
The character’s journey continued as Ryan reprised the role in the DC Animated Movie Universe and the animated series Constantine: City of Demons. By 2018, Ryan was upgraded to a series regular on The CW's Legends of Tomorrow, where he remained until the sixth season. This trajectory highlights a rare instance where a cancelled network property successfully migrated into a broader, interconnected television landscape, proving that dedicated fan bases and creative flexibility can sustain a character long after their original show has concluded.
