In short: In 2077, a high-surveillance dystopia ruled by corporations, a law enforcement officer is accidentally transported back to 2012 alongside a group of violent terrorists. Stranded in the past, she must hunt them down to prevent them from altering history, all while keeping her futuristic identity a total secret.

Created by Simon Barry, the Canadian science fiction series Continuum explores the high-stakes conflict between Kiera Cameron, a City Protective Services officer, and Liber8, a group of freedom fighters who escaped execution in 2077 by fleeing to Vancouver in 2012. While the terrorists aim to corrupt the present to secure their own future, Kiera is forced to navigate the modern world, joining the Vancouver Police Department to thwart their plans. She relies on her advanced technology and the assistance of a teen computer genius named Alec Sadler, who is destined to become a powerful corporate oligarch.

The narrative is deeply concerned with the fragility of time and the consequences of intervention. Kiera struggles with the knowledge that changing history might prevent her from ever returning to her husband and son in the future. As the series progresses, the scope expands to include complex factions like the Freelancers and alternate timelines, such as the one inhabited by Brad Tonkin, where the Corporate Congress never gained power. The show also explores the origins of the conflict, revealing that Julian Randol, Alec's stepbrother, eventually becomes the legendary figure known as Theseus, who mentors the terrorist leader Edouard Kagame.

Continuum ran for four seasons, concluding in 2015 with a total of 42 episodes. Although creator Simon Barry initially envisioned a run of seven to ten seasons, the series was granted a final six-episode fourth season to provide a definitive resolution to the storyline. The show remains a notable example of genre-bending television, having been developed specifically for the Showcase network, which embraced its complex premise from the beginning. By blending police procedural elements with high-concept science fiction, the series examines the tension between individual agency and the inevitable march of corporate-driven history.
