How a Stunt Gone Wrong Ended the First Disney Channel Spin-Off Series
In short: Cory in the House was a landmark Disney Channel sitcom, but its abrupt cancellation remains a cautionary tale. While the show enjoyed a successful run following its 2007 debut, a dangerous on-set accident involving its lead actor and a subsequent industry strike ultimately brought the production to a permanent, unceremonious halt.
Cory in the House premiered on January 12, 2007, as the first spin-off in Disney Channel history. Centered on Cory Baxter, who moves to Washington, D.C. after his father Victor secures a position as the White House executive chef, the series followed Cory’s humorous attempts to navigate life alongside the President’s daughter, Sophie Martinez. The show was notable for being the final Disney Channel series produced entirely in standard definition.
The series was originally intended to span three seasons, but its trajectory shifted during the filming of a season two episode. During a scene involving a rented boat, lead actor Kyle Massey decided to perform a stunt himself, leaping over the side. Massey hit the padded mats at an angle and struck his head on the concrete floor, requiring hospitalization. Although he eventually returned to work, the production was soon interrupted by the 2007–08 Writers Guild of America strike.
The combination of the accident, the strike, and a later lawsuit filed by the Massey family—which alleged ongoing physical and mental distress—led to the show's quiet cancellation. Producers Dennis Rinsler and Marc Warren noted that when the strike concluded, the network opted not to resume production. Despite its premature end, the show maintained a cultural footprint, eventually gaining a bizarre second life in 2026 when a surge of meme-driven interest propelled its 2008 Nintendo DS video game to become the second-highest-rated user-scored title on Metacritic.
