From tea plantations to Shakespeare, the restless life of actor Joss Ackland
In short: Joss Ackland was a prolific performer whose career spanned over 130 roles, from high-stakes espionage in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy to Disney’s The Mighty Ducks. Yet, behind the screen, his life was defined by profound personal resilience, including a harrowing house fire and the tragic loss of his eldest son.
Born in 1928 in a basement flat in London, Joss Ackland’s path to acting was unconventional. He left school at fifteen to pursue the craft, eventually training at the Central School of Speech and Drama. His early years were marked by financial hardship and a brief, dangerous stint managing a tea plantation in Nyasaland, now Malawi, before he returned to England to establish a steady career on stage and screen.
Ackland’s professional life was defined by a relentless work ethic. He appeared alongside legends like Maggie Smith and Judi Dench at the Old Vic and created the role of Juan Perón in the original musical Evita. His versatility allowed him to move seamlessly between serious drama, such as his portrayal of C.S. Lewis in Shadowlands, and pop-culture staples like the Pet Shop Boys' music videos—a choice he later admitted was driven by his grandchildren’s interests.
His personal life was equally intense. In 1963, his wife Rosemary survived a devastating house fire by jumping from a window, an accident that broke her back and left her hospitalized for 18 months. Despite the prognosis that she would never walk again, she recovered. The couple remained married for 51 years until Rosemary’s death in 2002, navigating the loss of their son Paul in 1982. Ackland, who was appointed a CBE in 2001, continued acting well into his nineties, eventually passing away at his home in Clovelly in 2023.
Ackland’s career was marked by a candid self-awareness. In later interviews, he openly criticized some of his own film choices, labeling them as 'awful' and attributing his participation to a self-described workaholic nature. Whether playing a villain in Lethal Weapon 2 or a mentor in The Mighty Ducks, Ackland remained a constant, recognizable presence in British and international entertainment for over seven decades.
