In short: In the 2018 neo-noir Destroyer, Nicole Kidman portrays a broken LAPD detective haunted by a past undercover mission gone wrong. As she tracks down the remnants of a criminal gang, the film unravels a dark history of betrayal, stolen money, and the heavy toll of a life lived in shadows.

Directed by Karyn Kusama, Destroyer follows Erin Bell, a detective whose life is defined by a failed operation sixteen years prior. While embedded in a gang alongside her partner and lover, Chris, Bell participated in a bank robbery that ended in tragedy. A dye pack explosion and the subsequent murder of a bank teller by the gang leader, Silas, led to Chris's death and Bell's narrow escape. She kept a share of the heist money, hiding it in a storage unit, only to find years later that most of it was ruined by the dye.

The narrative shifts between the present-day investigation and these traumatic flashbacks. Bell’s pursuit of Silas is driven by a mix of professional duty and personal penance. Her journey takes her through a gritty underworld, interacting with former gang members like the terminally ill Toby, the lawyer Arturo, and the drug-addicted Petra. The film is noted for its uncompromising tone and Kidman’s transformative performance, which critics described as a complete disappearance into the character's hardened exterior.

Despite receiving generally positive reviews—holding a 74% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes—the film struggled commercially. Produced on a budget estimated between $9 million and $12.4 million, it grossed approximately $5.6 million worldwide. While it failed to find a broad audience, Kidman’s portrayal earned her a nomination for Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama at the 76th Golden Globe Awards. The film remains a challenging study of guilt, as Bell ultimately confronts Silas and chooses to face the consequences of her own past actions.
