In short: Before he was a hero, Donkey Kong was a failed replacement for Bluto. Born from Shigeru Miyamoto's need to repurpose unsold arcade cabinets, this stubborn gorilla evolved from a villainous pet into one of Nintendo's most enduring and bestselling global superstars.

The origins of Donkey Kong are rooted in a financial crisis. In 1980, the commercial failure of Nintendo's Radar Scope left Nintendo of America in financial distress. To repurpose the unsold cabinets, Shigeru Miyamoto—then a first-time designer—was tasked with creating a new game. Miyamoto initially envisioned a love triangle featuring Popeye, Olive Oyl, and Bluto, but when a licensing deal with King Features fell through, he had to create original characters to fill the roles. This creative pivot was driven by the need to solve a specific inventory problem. Miyamoto's task was to find a way to utilize the existing hardware effectively.

Miyamoto replaced Bluto with a hairy, brutish gorilla, drawing inspiration from the 1933 film King Kong and the fairy tale "Beauty and the Beast." To name the character, he combined "donkey" to convey stubbornness with "kong" to imply a gorilla. Despite objections from Nintendo of America, who felt "donkey" was an odd descriptor for an idiot, the name stuck. It is a common misconception that the name is a mistranslation of "Monkey Kong." This naming convention helped define his personality. His design was intended to be humorous rather than repulsive.

The character's identity has shifted significantly over decades. In his 1981 debut, Donkey Kong was an antagonist and Mario's rebellious pet. However, starting with the 1994 Donkey Kong Country series developed by Rare, he was recast as a protagonist protecting his banana stash. This transition from villain to hero has made him one of Nintendo's most successful franchises, establishing the company as a dominant force in the international video game industry. This evolution helped cement his status as a household name. He has since appeared in various media, including comics and theme park attractions.
