How a rejected Donkey Kong Jr. redesign became a gaming icon named Diddy Kong
In short: Created by British developers Gregg Mayles and Kevin Bayliss, Diddy Kong was never meant to be his own character. Originally conceived as a modern update to Donkey Kong Jr., his agile design was rejected by Nintendo, forcing a pivot that birthed one of gaming’s most recognizable sidekicks and protagonists.
The development of Diddy Kong began with a request from Nintendo to provide Donkey Kong with a sidekick for the 1994 title Donkey Kong Country. Designers Gregg Mayles and Kevin Bayliss sought to create a character with a build distinct from the hulking Donkey Kong, aiming for greater agility. They drew inspiration for his appearance from the Coco Pops mascot, Coco the Monkey. Although they initially considered making him a spider monkey, Bayliss noted that the final design did not resemble one. The team also prioritized incorporating a tail into his gameplay mechanics, a feature absent from the original Donkey Kong Jr. model.
Naming the character proved to be a legal challenge. The team initially settled on 'Dinky Kong' because it signified his small stature, but they were forced to change it after receiving legal advice regarding a manufacturer of 'Dinky' toy cars. They eventually chose 'Diddy' as a synonym for 'small.' This was not the only hurdle; Nintendo initially rejected the character's design because it deviated too far from the established Donkey Kong Jr. aesthetic. Nintendo only accepted the character after the developers argued that the new look was better suited to the specific setting of Donkey Kong Country.
Since his debut, Diddy Kong has evolved from a sidekick to a franchise staple. He starred in Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest and later appeared in titles ranging from Diddy Kong Racing to the Super Smash Bros. series. His cultural footprint has expanded beyond consoles into theme park rides at Super Nintendo World and appearances in The Super Mario Bros. Movie. In 2025, the character received a visual update featuring a rounder belly and a cap with 'DD' initials, a move that sparked debate among critics regarding whether the addition of teeth enhanced or detracted from his classic, cartoony appeal.
