The designer's ideal woman was born from a year of a hundred sketches
In short: Created to break the mold of female action protagonists, Bayonetta is a complex mix of folk music, high fashion, and combat. From her hair-based wardrobe to her four signature guns, every detail of this Umbra Witch was meticulously crafted to ensure she was more than meets the eye.
Developed by PlatinumGames and owned by Sega, the character was the brainchild of Hideki Kamiya and designer Mari Shimazaki. Seeking a departure from male protagonists, Kamiya tasked Shimazaki with creating a modern witch with three specific traits: a female lead, a modern witch aesthetic, and the use of four guns. This design process was exhaustive, spanning a full year and involving roughly one hundred different character iterations.
The character's visual identity is deeply symbolic. Her name was inspired by a bayonet to imply hidden depth, while her four guns—named Parsley, Sage, Rosemary, and Thyme after the folk song 'Scarborough Fair'—were modeled after derringers for their rapid-fire capability. Even her wardrobe is functional; her outfit is made from her own hair, serving as both adornment and protection. Interestingly, the design team intentionally gave her longer limbs and wider, more rounded hips to counter the trend of thin, short-limbed female characters in action games.
The character's identity has also been a point of intense debate. While some feminist commentators view her hypersexualized image as empowering and sex-positive, others criticize it as objectifying. This complexity extends to her voice acting history; while Atsuko Tanaka has provided the Japanese voice since the character's inception, the English role saw a controversial recast from Hellena Taylor to Jennifer Hale in 2022, following disputes regarding compensation rates.
In the narrative, Bayonetta is one of only two surviving Umbra Witches, born from a forbidden union between a Witch and a Lumen Sage. Her story involves a 500-year slumber in a lake-bottom coffin after being sealed away by her rival, Jeanne, to protect her from exploitation.
