Elite: How a Spanish Teen Drama Turned High School Murder Into a Global Phenomenon
In short: Set in the ultra-exclusive Las Encinas, Elite follows the collision of working-class scholarship students and the wealthy elite. Across eight seasons, the series masterfully weaves flash-forward mysteries with intense social drama, exploring themes of classism, sexuality, and crime, ultimately culminating in the permanent closure of its infamous fictional school.
Created by Carlos Montero and Darío Madrona, Elite debuted on Netflix on 5 October 2018. The series centers on Las Encinas, a prestigious Spanish high school where the lives of privileged teenagers are disrupted by three scholarship students. This clash of lifestyles serves as the backdrop for a series of dark, interconnected mysteries, often revealed through non-linear storytelling that jumps between police interrogations and the events leading to a central tragedy.
The narrative is defined by its recurring cycle of violence and cover-ups. From the murder of Marina in the first season to the final closure of the school following Joel's death in the eighth season, the students are repeatedly forced to navigate the consequences of their illicit activities. Key incidents, including the deaths of Polo, Samuel, and Raúl, are consistently hidden from the public, creating a persistent tension between the characters' desires and the secrets they must maintain to survive their environment.
Beyond the central mysteries, the show explores progressive and often controversial themes, including parental neglect, drug use, and the complexities of sexual identity. Characters like Omar, who struggles to reconcile his sexuality with his family's expectations, and the siblings Ari, Mencía, and Patrick, who navigate the fallout of their father's criminal actions, provide a human dimension to the high-stakes drama. The series concluded on 26 July 2024, leaving behind a legacy of secrets that eventually forced the institution to shut its doors forever.
