In short: Before she was a BAFTA-winning star, Siân Phillips was a young girl in South Wales who spoke only Welsh. Learning English by listening to the radio, she would eventually reject Hollywood contracts to master the complexities of the stage, becoming one of the most enduring figures in British drama.

Born in Gwaun-Cae-Gurwen in 1933, Phillips’s journey began with a linguistic shift. While her childhood was spent primarily speaking Welsh, she developed her English through the radio. After studying English and Philosophy at University College Cardiff, she entered the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in 1955, joining a cohort that included future stars Diana Rigg and Glenda Jackson.

Her early career was marked by intense technical skill and sudden acclaim. While still a student, she achieved a significant London success playing Magda, an opera diva, and was the first actress since Sarah Bernhardt to play the role. Her talent was so evident that she was offered three film contracts in the United States upon leaving RADA, but she declined them, choosing instead to focus on the stage.

Phillips’s versatility allowed her to transition from classical roles, such as Saint Joan and Hedda Gabler, to iconic television performances. She earned a BAFTA and a Royal Television Society award for her portrayal of Livia in the 1976 BBC series I, Claudius. Later, she earned a Tony Award nomination for her performance as Marlene Dietrich in the musical Marlene.

Despite a career spanning over 70 years, Phillips has been candid about its personal tolls. In her autobiographies, Private Faces (1999) and Public Places (2001), she detailed the tempestuous nature of her marriage to actor Peter O'Toole. Even as she approached her 90s, she continued to evolve, recently becoming one of the first female members of the Garrick Club alongside Judi Dench in 2024.
