The first Hong Kong actor to win every major film award
In short: Nicholas Tse's trajectory from a heartbroken teenager with a second-hand guitar to a multi-hyphenate mogul is a study in reinvention. Beyond the headlines of his high-profile relationships and legal hurdles, he carved a unique path as a rare triple-threat in the Hong Kong entertainment industry.
Nicholas Tse's career is defined by a series of firsts and pivots. In 1997, he signed a record deal with the Fitto label (now Emperor Entertainment Group) to help settle his father's debts. Following the massive popularity of his first record, My Attitude, he received the 1997 Jade Solid Gold Best Ten Music Awards Presentation's Most Popular New Artist Award. By 2002, he received the World's Best Chinese Artist award for his album Jade Butterfly.
His transition into acting was equally prolific. A 2011 achievement for Tse involved securing the Hong Kong Film Award for Best Actor following his work in The Stool Pigeon. This victory made him the first actor to ever win in all three major acting categories at the Hong Kong Film Awards: Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, and Best New Performer. His martial arts skills, honed under Jackie Chan and Chung Chi Li, further solidified his screen presence in films like Gen-X-Cops.
Tse's influence extends into business and gastronomy. He founded Post Production Office, a special effects company later acquired by Digital Domain in 2016, where he became chairman for Greater China. In 2014, he pivoted to the culinary world with his show Chef Nic, eventually becoming the first "Friend of Michelin" on October 28, 2016. This diverse portfolio—spanning music, film, special effects, and food—illustrates a complex career built on navigating both immense public scrutiny and industrial evolution.
His personal life has been as public as his professional one. From a 2002 car crash that led to a prison sentence for obstruction of justice to high-profile marriages and divorces, Tse has navigated a turbulent media landscape. He continues to lead the industry, having recently made history as the initial Chinese vocalist to perform at Kai Tak Stadium during April 2025.
