In short: What happens when a trained mercenary is tasked with protecting a high school girl? In Shoji Gatoh's Full Metal Panic!, Sousuke Sagara must navigate the complexities of civilian social life while battling global terrorism, creating a unique blend of military sci-fi and school comedy.

The series, written by Shoji Gatoh and illustrated by Shikidouji, centers on the 'Boy Meets Girl' theme. The narrative follows Sousuke Sagara, a soldier for the private military organization Mithril, who is assigned to protect Kaname Chidori. Chidori is a 'Whispered'—individuals possessing subconscious, advanced technological knowledge that makes them targets for various antagonistic groups like Amalgam. Sagara's mixed Afghan-Japanese heritage is a key part of his background. He was recruited by Mithril after surviving as a guerrilla fighter in Helmand at age eight. Chidori, meanwhile, is a direct and brash individual who studied in the United States.

The story is notable for its dual nature, splitting its focus between serious military missions and comedic side stories at Jindai High School. To create a more dynamic relationship, Gatoh moved away from the trope of the female lead needing constant protection, instead allowing Chidori to support Sagara multiple times. This approach helped balance the series' sci-fi and realistic elements, drawing inspiration from existing Japanese series like Mazinger Z. The protagonist often struggles with social integration because he views everyday civilian situations through a combat lens. This unique perspective frequently leads to him being perceived as a military fanatic by his classmates.

The franchise has seen extensive expansion since its inception. The original light novel series, which began serialization in Monthly Dragon Magazine in June 1998, has sold 11 million copies. The world has been adapted into multiple anime series, including productions by Gonzo in 2002 and Kyoto Animation in 2003 and 2005. Most recently, a new series titled Full Metal Panic! Family was released in January 2024, jumping two decades forward from the original events. The original light novel series has been published under the Fujimi Fantasia Bunko imprint. Additionally, a spin-off titled Full Metal Panic! Another was released between 2011 and 2016.
