How a pun on ice cream became a warning for the Classic Literature Club
In short: In the quiet city of Kamiyama, Houtarou Oreki lives by a strict code of energy conservation. But when curiosity strikes his new club members, he is pulled into mysteries that blend daily life with deep, hidden truths, proving that even the smallest details can hold significant weight.
Produced by Kyoto Animation and directed by Yasuhiro Takemoto, the 22-episode series Hyouka is a unique blend of mystery and slice-of-life genres. The story follows Houtarou Oreki, a student who prefers to avoid unnecessary effort, and his classmates Eru Chitanda, Satoshi Fukube, and Mayaka Ibara. Their investigations range from uncovering the truth behind a missing relative to solving mock crimes inspired by Agatha Christie's 'The A.B.C. Murders'. The animation was overseen by series composer Shoji Gatoh and character designer Futoshi Nishiya. This production features a distinctive visual style that has earned significant praise.
The series is based on the 'Classic Literature Club' novels by Honobu Yonezawa, whose actual home city, Takayama, served as the inspiration for the fictional setting of Kamiyama. The title itself, Hyouka, is a clever linguistic pun; while it translates to 'ice cream' in English, it serves as a warning for club members to voice their opinions. The plot involves a search for a missing uncle who disappeared in India. This mystery is central to the motivations of Eru Chitanda.
The production is noted for its high-quality visual effects and a soundtrack by Kohei Tanaka that features classical pieces like Bach's 'Air on the G String' and Fauré's 'Sicilienne'. The series has gained significant critical acclaim, appearing on Crunchyroll's list of the top 100 anime of the decade and ranking 1st in the 2012 Spring Anime category on BIGLOBE's Animeone. The series was broadcast across various Japanese networks, including Tokyo MX and KBS Kyoto. It also received a special streaming release via Ustream.
