A film about the Polish-Belarusian border crisis sparked a national firestorm before its release.
In short: Agnieszka Holland’s 2023 drama Green Border dramatizes the plight of migrants trapped in the forest between Belarus and Poland. The film earned international acclaim and the Special Jury Prize at Venice, yet it triggered a fierce, politically charged backlash from Polish government officials who condemned it as anti-Polish propaganda.
The film follows a Syrian family, an English-speaking Afghan refugee, and a Polish border guard named Jan, all caught in the humanitarian crisis at the Belarus–European Union border. Directed by Agnieszka Holland, the production is a black-and-white drama that draws on hundreds of hours of research, including interviews with activists, border residents, and anonymous border guards. Holland aimed to create a documentary-like, metaphorical experience, asserting that while the characters are composed, the events depicted are documented realities.
Upon its release in September 2023, the film faced intense hostility from Poland's then-ruling Law and Justice party. Ministers labeled it a 'disgusting libel' and a 'brutal attack' on uniformed officers, with some officials comparing the film to Nazi-era propaganda. This rhetoric fueled a massive review-bombing campaign on the website Filmweb, where the film’s rating plummeted as users—many of whom had not seen the movie—left scores as low as 2.3 out of 10. The controversy extended to the physical world, with some cinemas forced to show government-mandated videos before screenings, and others cancelling showings entirely.
The backlash reached the highest levels of cultural administration. Holland claimed that members of the committee responsible for selecting Poland’s Academy Award entry feared that nominating her film would invite government reprisals, such as the withholding of future funding. Ultimately, the committee chose a different film, The Peasants, by a vote of four to two. Despite the political vitriol, the film received universal acclaim from critics, holding a 94% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It remains a stark, polarizing example of how cinema can become a battlefield for national identity and historical memory.
