In a futuristic Los Angeles, a secret hospital for criminals hides a dark past.
In short: Nurse Jean Thomas runs the Hotel Artemis, a high-tech sanctuary for criminals governed by strict rules. But when a chaotic riot erupts over water privatization, the arrival of a notorious crime lord forces the nurse to confront the devastating truth about her own son's death and her employer's true nature.
Released in 2018, Hotel Artemis marks the directorial debut of Drew Pearce. Set in a near-future Los Angeles on June 21, 2028, the narrative centers on an underground medical facility for the criminal underworld. The hospital is managed by Jean Thomas, a nurse who has not left the building for 22 years due to agoraphobia and grief. The facility offers advanced care, including robot-assisted surgery and 3D-printed organs, all while maintaining a strict code of conduct that forbids weapons and killing within its walls.
The plot accelerates when a bank robbery goes wrong, forcing criminals Sherman and Lev to seek refuge at the hotel. Their arrival coincides with a city-wide riot triggered by water privatization and the unexpected appearance of Orian Franklin, known as the Wolf King, who is both a crime lord and the owner of the Artemis. As the nurse treats the Wolf King, she discovers he was responsible for her son Beau’s death, having orchestrated a cover-up involving the police to recruit her into his service. This revelation shatters the fragile order of the hotel.
The film features an ensemble cast led by Jodie Foster, whose performance as the nurse received significant critical acclaim for its depth and emotional weight. Despite praise for the acting and visual style, the film struggled at the box office, grossing $13 million against a $15 million budget. Critics were divided, with some appreciating the film's wit and performances while others found the execution predictable. Ultimately, the story concludes with the hotel's collapse as the nurse, Sherman, and the assassin Nice flee into the chaos of the riots, leaving the facility behind.
