In short: How I Met Your Father spent years in development hell before Hulu finally greenlit the series. Starring Hilary Duff and featuring a future-set narrative voiced by Kim Cattrall, the show attempted to capture the magic of its predecessor while navigating the complex, shifting landscape of modern streaming viewership and audience demand.

The journey to bring How I Met Your Father to life was marked by multiple false starts. Following the 2014 failure of a CBS pilot titled How I Met Your Dad, creators Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger began developing a new version in 2016. However, their commitments to the series This Is Us stalled the project. Subsequent attempts by Fox to revive the concept with different writers also fell through, leaving the idea in limbo for years.

Hulu finally ordered the series in April 2021, with principal photography commencing that August. The show premiered in January 2022, featuring a premise where a future version of Sophie, played by Kim Cattrall, recounts her romantic life in Manhattan to her son in the year 2050. The series leaned heavily into its lineage, incorporating guest appearances from original How I Met Your Mother cast members like Cobie Smulders and Neil Patrick Harris.

Despite winning four Creative Arts Emmy Awards, the show faced mixed critical reception. While it maintained a presence in streaming charts—ranking as the twenty-sixth most-watched streaming original of 2023 according to Whip Media—it was ultimately canceled in September 2023 after two seasons. The cancellation marked the end of a long-running effort to successfully expand the universe of the original 2005 sitcom.

The production process was notably fluid, with several casting changes occurring before the premiere. Brandon Micheal Hall was initially cast in a starring role but departed due to scheduling conflicts, leading to the casting of Daniel Augustin. The show's international distribution also spanned multiple platforms, including Disney+ and Star+, reflecting the evolving nature of global content licensing during its brief two-year run.
