A Halloween-obsessed delicatessen worker becomes the unlikely hero of a chaotic Massachusetts town.
In short: Hubie Dubois is the town of Salem's perennial Halloween monitor, a man constantly bullied by his neighbors. When a series of mysterious disappearances plagues the town on Halloween night, the local police suspect Hubie himself. He must navigate a web of pranks and genuine danger to clear his name.
In the 2020 horror-comedy Hubie Halloween, directed by Steve Brill, the titular character is a dimwitted but well-meaning delicatessen employee who takes his role as the city's official Halloween Helper very seriously. Despite his dedication to keeping the streets of Salem, Massachusetts, safe, he is a frequent target for local bullies and practical jokes. His life takes a dark turn when he investigates his strange new neighbor, Nick Hudson—who believes he is a 359-year-old werewolf—and learns of an escaped convict named Richie Hartman.
As Halloween festivities descend into chaos, several of Hubie's tormentors, including his co-worker Mike and his old classmates the Hennesseys, vanish. While the police, led by Sergeant Steve Downey, initially suspect Hubie of orchestrating these kidnappings as revenge, the truth is far more domestic. The culprit is revealed to be Hubie's own mother, Estelle, who kidnapped the bullies to protect her son. After Hubie rescues them, the townspeople finally acknowledge their jealousy and mistreatment of him.
The film, which was released on Netflix in October 2020, features an extensive ensemble cast, including Adam Sandler, Kevin James, and Julie Bowen. Production took place in various Massachusetts locations such as Salem, Lynnfield, and Hamilton during the summer of 2019. The project is notable for its tribute to actor Cameron Boyce, who was originally cast in the role of Mike Mundi but passed away from epilepsy complications shortly before filming began; his friend Karan Brar took over the part in his honor.
Following its release, the film became the top-streamed title on Netflix for two consecutive weeks. By the end of the narrative, the town’s perspective on Hubie has shifted entirely. One year later, he is married to his childhood love interest, Violet Valentine, and has been elected the new mayor of Salem, finally earning the respect he sought while continuing his commitment to the town's holiday traditions.
