How the iCarly revival brought a childhood favorite into the adult social media era
In short: Eight years after the original sitcom ended, the iCarly revival reunited its core cast to navigate adulthood in Seattle. The series follows Carly Shay as she relaunches her webshow, balancing the pressures of being a modern influencer with the familiar chaos of her life at the iconic Bushwell Plaza.
The 2021 revival of iCarly, which premiered on Paramount+ on June 17, 2021, serves as a direct continuation of the original Nickelodeon sitcom that aired from 2007 to 2012. Returning to the familiar setting of Bushwell Plaza, the series catches up with Carly Shay, now a social media influencer, as she attempts to restart her comedy web series. She is joined by her older brother Spencer, who has achieved success as a wealthy artist, and her neighbor Freddie Benson, who returns to the building after experiencing professional and personal setbacks, including two divorces and a failed tech start-up.
The narrative structure of the revival shifts focus toward the complexities of adult life. Freddie is now a father figure to his 11-year-old adopted stepdaughter, Millicent, and Carly navigates new dynamics with her roommate Harper, an aspiring fashion stylist. The series maintains a connection to its roots by featuring recurring appearances from legacy characters, such as Freddie's mother Marissa, the former doorman Lewbert, and Carly's old nemesis Nevel Papperman, while introducing new figures like Carly's manager Paul.
Spanning three seasons, the show received positive reviews for its updated take on the characters. It explored themes of fame, career transitions, and evolving relationships, including the romantic development between Carly and Freddie. Despite its successful run, the series was cancelled in October 2023 following the conclusion of its third season, which had premiered earlier that year on June 1.
The production relied on a blend of returning cast members, including Miranda Cosgrove, Jerry Trainor, and Nathan Kress, alongside new additions like Laci Mosley and Jaidyn Triplett. By grounding the characters in their established history while pushing them into contemporary challenges, the revival offered a look at how the iconic trio adapted to the digital age, ultimately concluding their story after a total of three seasons.
