Why Francis Ford Coppola directed a film that critics universally panned
In short: Francis Ford Coppola, the legendary director of Apocalypse Now, pivoted to a whimsical fable about a boy aging four times faster than normal. Despite the film's negative reception, Coppola remained unashamed, finding the project sweet and amusing, while the screenwriter feared the production would destroy his career entirely.
Released in 1996, Jack stars Robin Williams as a boy with a unique medical condition that causes him to age at an accelerated rate. By age 10, he possesses the physical appearance of a 40-year-old man. The film follows his struggle to navigate childhood, school, and social isolation, eventually culminating in a valedictorian speech that serves as a poignant reminder of life's brevity. For Coppola, the story resonated deeply, echoing his own childhood experience with polio and the profound grief surrounding the death of his son, Gian-Carlo Coppola.
The production was marked by significant behind-the-scenes friction. Screenwriters James DeMonaco and Gary Nadeau originally intended for Nadeau to direct, but Disney replaced him after Robin Williams requested a list of directors that included Coppola. While DeMonaco initially viewed this as political maneuvering, he was surprised when Coppola accepted. The creative vision faced further interference when Michael Ovitz, the new head of the Walt Disney Company, demanded that the film's melancholy tone be lightened and darker scenes removed. Both the director and the screenwriter were ultimately dissatisfied with the final product.
Upon its August 1996 release, the film struggled to find critical favor. It holds a 17% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a score of 31 out of 100 on Metacritic, with critics labeling it a tedious fantasy. Despite a $45 million budget, it grossed $78 million worldwide. Coppola later reflected on the backlash, suggesting that audiences and critics struggled to reconcile his reputation as a serious auteur with his decision to direct a lighthearted Disney project. He maintained that he was happy to explore different genres, regardless of the public's harsh assessment.
