The man behind the 'Nitzsche-phone' and the Wall of Sound
In short: He was the secret architect of rock's most iconic textures. From orchestrating Phil Spector’s legendary Wall of Sound to inventing a fictional instrument for the Rolling Stones, Jack Nitzsche’s influence shaped the very DNA of 1960s and 70s music.
Jack Nitzsche was a versatile force in American music, serving as a producer, arranger, and composer. In the early 1960s, he became a vital collaborator for Phil Spector, helping to orchestrate the dense, powerful 'Wall of Sound' technique, notably heard on Ike and Tina Turner's 'River Deep, Mountain High'. His session work often involved 'The Wrecking Crew', a premier group of musicians including drummers Hal Blaine and Earl Palmer, and bassist Carol Kaye.
Nitz'$.s influence extended deeply into the rock canon. During the 1964 T.A.M.I. Show, he met the Rolling Stones, eventually playing keyboards on several of their albums, including 'Aftermath' and 'Between the Buttons'. He even contributed to the band's mythos through the 'Nitzsche-phone'—a credit used on Stones albums that was actually just a piano or organ recorded with unique microphone placement. This clever marketing trick, as noted by former manager Andrew Loog Oldham, was designed to make listeners feel they were hearing entirely new, invented instruments.
Beyond pop, Nitzsche transitioned into a prolific film composer, scoring cinematic landmarks such as 'The Exorcist', 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest', and 'Performance'. Alongside Buffy Sainte-Marie and Will Jennings, he shared the 1983 Academy Award for composing 'Up Where We Belong'. Despite a career marked by immense creativity, his later years were complicated by substance abuse, legal troubles, and a 1998 stroke that ended his musical career before his death in 2000.
