How a teenage bass player became the architect of the modern hit record sound
In short: Bob Clearmountain transformed the role of the mixing engineer, shaping the sonic identity of legends from David Bowie to Bruce Springsteen. From his early days as a studio gofer to establishing the industry standard for monitors, his career defines the sound of popular music across five decades of hits.
Born in 1953, Bob Clearmountain began his journey in Connecticut before moving to New York City. Initially a bass player in bar bands, he grew disillusioned with relying on others for his career. A visit to Mediasound Studios in New York sparked a realization that he belonged behind the glass. In 1972, he secured a job as a gofer at the studio, finding himself unexpectedly assisting on a session with Duke Ellington on his very first day.
Clearmountain’s reputation solidified as Chief Engineer at the Power Station, a studio he helped design with Tony Bongiovi. During this period, he mixed iconic albums for Chic and Sister Sledge, which established him as a premier mixing engineer. He is widely credited with popularizing the Yamaha NS-10 monitors, which became a global studio standard, though he attributes the initial recommendation to his colleague Bill Scheniman. His work on landmark records like Bruce Springsteen's Born in the U.S.A. and David Bowie's Let's Dance cemented his influence.
Throughout his career, Clearmountain has balanced studio production with live engineering for major events like Live Aid. In 1994, he built his private studio, Mix This!, in his Pacific Palisades home. After the original facility was destroyed in the 2025 Palisades Fire, he rebuilt it behind the headquarters of Apogee Electronics in Santa Monica. Today, he continues to shape the industry, having received numerous accolades including Grammy and Emmy awards, the TEC Les Paul Award, and an honorary doctorate from BerkleeNYC in 2025.
