In short: Before he was the tragic scientist of Krypton, Jor-El began as a 1936 comic strip character named Jor-L. This early version was not an alien, but a crime-fighting detective in the service of an Interplanetary Federation, battling a bandit queen long before the Man of Steel ever took flight.

Created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, the character who would become Superman's father debuted in 1936, over a year before the first Superman story was published. This original Jor-L appeared in the strip Federal Men as a far-future investigator. It was not until 1939 that the character appeared in the Superman newspaper strip, eventually evolving into the iconic scientist who foresees Krypton's destruction.

The character's history is a complex web of retcons and alternate realities. In the Silver Age of the 1960s, DC Comics established that the Golden Age Jor-L and the modern Jor-El were distinct figures from separate universes. Over decades, his backstory shifted wildly: he has been depicted as a cold, emotionally sterile intellectual, a victim of a repressive Science Council, and even a time-traveling figure who consulted Thomas Wayne to determine if Earth was a suitable home for his son, Kal-El.

Jor-El's legacy has been defined by his desperate attempts to save his family. While he is consistently portrayed as the scientist who launches his infant son toward Earth, the mechanism varies from a homemade spaceship to genetically altered birthing matrices. His role has expanded beyond the page into film and television, portrayed by actors ranging from Marlon Brando to Russell Crowe, and even appearing as a holographic consciousness in the Fortress of Solitude to guide his son.

Recent iterations have pushed the character into darker territory. In the New 52 and DC Rebirth eras, Jor-El was revealed to have survived Krypton's destruction, only to become disillusioned with humanity as 'Mister Oz.' Whether he is a tragic martyr, a cold scientist, or a complex cosmic entity, Jor-El remains the foundational architect of the Superman mythos, forever tethered to the doomed planet Krypton.
