In short: Jonah Hex is a cynical, scarred antihero of the American West, bound by a personal code to protect the innocent. His life was a violent odyssey, spanning from the American Civil War to a bizarre, post-apocalyptic future, before he met his end in a quiet, final act of betrayal.

Born in 1838, Jonah Hex endured a brutal childhood under an abusive father before being sold into slavery to an Apache tribe. His life took a dark turn after he was betrayed by his adopted brother, Noh-Tante, during a manhood rite. Following this, he was disfigured with a heated tomahawk, receiving the mark of the demon that would define his appearance for the rest of his life. This trauma set the stage for a career as a surly, cynical bounty hunter, though he remained guided by a personal code of honor.

Hex’s history is marked by shifting loyalties and strange encounters. He served as a Confederate lieutenant during the Civil War, yet his internal conflict regarding slavery led him to desert his post. His later years were defined by a series of supernatural and futuristic anomalies. He was once transported to a 21st-century, post-apocalyptic Seattle, where he navigated a landscape of motorcycle gangs and advanced technology, eventually finding solace in the discovery of his own stuffed corpse, which confirmed he would one day return to his own time.

Despite his reputation as a cold-blooded killer, Hex often acted as a reluctant protector of the vulnerable. Whether battling corrupt railroad interests, rescuing kidnapped children, or confronting voodoo-powered zombies, his path was one of constant struggle. He eventually retired in 1904 at the age of 66, living with a Native American woman named Tall Bird. His life ended in a Cheyenne saloon, where he was murdered by an outlaw named George Barrow while attempting to put on his spectacles, marking the end of a legendary, if tragic, existence.
