The flying, overconfident prankster who evolved from a gentle, imaginary friend
In short: Astrid Lindgren’s Karlsson-on-the-Roof is a short, plump man who flies via a button-activated propeller. While he is now known for his mischievous, self-centered antics, the character actually evolved from a much kinder, propeller-less figure named Mr. Lilyvale, who once visited Lindgren’s daughter as a secret, imaginary companion.
Karlsson lives in a small house hidden behind a chimney in Vasastan, Stockholm. He is defined by his extreme self-confidence, often claiming to be the best at everything. His primary companion is a seven-year-old boy named Svante Svantesson, known as Lillebror. Karlsson is a chaotic influence, frequently pranking others and leaving Lillebror to face the consequences of his disappearances. Though initially dismissed by the Svantesson family as an imaginary friend, Karlsson eventually wins over the family and even transforms the stern nanny, Fröken Bock.
The character's origins trace back to Mr. Lilyvale, a friendly, non-flying figure from Lindgren’s book In the Land of Twilight. Mr. Lilyvale was a secret visitor to Lindgren’s daughter, Karin, and lacked the bossy, selfish traits that define Karlsson. Lindgren herself noted that Mr. Lilyvale eventually morphed into the flying, propeller-equipped Karlsson. This evolution reflects a shift from a gentle, ethereal presence to a boisterous, tangible character who interacts openly with the world, even if his antics remain disruptive.
The series has seen diverse international interpretations, particularly in the Soviet Union, where two animated films directed by Boris Stepantsev—Junior and Karlson (1968) and Karlson Returns (1970)—became cultural staples. In these versions, Lillebror is known as Malysh, and the character remains beloved across former Soviet states. English translations have been less consistent, with publishers frequently renaming characters like Lillebror to Midge, Smidge, or Eric, and Fröken Bock to Miss Black or Miss Crawley, depending on the edition. The character’s reach is surprisingly broad, even appearing in the name of a Ukrainian military unit.
