Is your family pet a secret alien mastermind plotting to conquer the entire planet?
In short: In the animated series Kid vs. Kat, ten-year-old Coop Burtonburger discovers his sister's new pet is actually a sinister alien from the planet Kat Nebula. As the feline mastermind sabotages Coop's life, the boy struggles to expose the truth while being dismissed as a fool by everyone around him.
Created by Rob Boutilier and produced by Studio B Productions, Kid vs. Kat first appeared as a pilot at MIPCOM Jr. in 2006. Originally titled Look What My Sister Dragged In, the show was officially developed following a deal with YTV in 2007. Production began in January 2008, utilizing Flash animation to bring the fictional town of Bootsville, British Columbia, to life. The series eventually spanned two seasons, totaling 52 episodes, before concluding in 2011.
The narrative centers on the conflict between Coop and Mr. Kat, a Katnipian alien resembling a Sphynx cat. While Coop’s spoiled younger sister Millie remains oblivious to the creature's true nature, Coop finds an unlikely ally in his best friend, Dennis. By the second season, the duo is joined by Fiona. Despite the high-stakes battle against an extraterrestrial threat, the show maintains a comedic tone, with Common Sense Media reviewer Emily Ashby noting that the feline's outrageous schemes provide fun entertainment for younger audiences.
The show's global reach was significant, with DHX Media securing distribution deals across various international markets, including Disney XD channels in Latin America, India, and Japan. Although fans might wonder about the fate of the duo, Boutilier eventually clarified in 2017 that Coop and Kat moved past their rivalry to become friends. The series remains a notable example of Canadian animation, having been licensed for broadcast across numerous networks worldwide before its production rights prevented a third season.
The production process involved multiple international partners, with animation services provided by Feitong Cartoon Graphics Services and background work handled by Top Draw Animation. This collaborative effort helped the show maintain a consistent aesthetic throughout its run. While the premise of a pet-turned-alien-invader is inherently absurd, the show's enduring appeal lies in the persistent, often futile, efforts of a child trying to prove the impossible to an unyielding adult world.
