In short: Before the famous Keyblade War, a secret conflict reshaped the world. In the prequel Kingdom Hearts χ, players join factions to hoard light, only to discover that the war's devastating conclusion was erased from their memories by a spirit who lied to keep them sane.

Kingdom Hearts χ is a prequel set in Daybreak Town, hundreds of years before the series' established timeline. The narrative centers on the 'Master of Masters' and his six apprentices, the Foretellers. These masters used a Book of Prophecies to project distant worlds—including locations from Disney and Final Fantasy—to gather 'Lux,' a source of light. To prevent a prophesied catastrophe, the Foretellers divided the world into five 'Unions' based on animal icons, such as Unicornis and Ursus, to compete for control of the dwindling light.

The game's climax reveals a brutal reality: the Keyblade War was a desperate struggle for survival that resulted in the world's destruction. The player character, after fighting alone until collapsing from exhaustion, was told by a spirit named Chirithy that the entire war was merely a dream. In reality, the player was the sole survivor of a cataclysmic event. This deception was part of a larger effort to preserve the minds of the survivors, though the truth eventually leaked through the 'Dandelions,' a group of wielders who sought to rebuild the world in its aftermath.

The story eventually branches into Kingdom Hearts Union χ, which takes place in an alternate data worldline. Here, the player relives the past in simulated datascapes to forget the war. The narrative reveals that the Master of Masters intended to use his apprentices as vessels to contain thirteen embodiments of True Darkness. The game's complex lore connects directly to Kingdom Hearts III, involving time travel, malfunctions in the data simulations, and a final fate where the player is reborn to become a mentor to the series' primary antagonist, Xehanort.
